Why does my index/landing/welcome page flash button bar, taglines, quicklinks, or text configuration items, not display properly after transferring it up to my website ? 2009-09-17
This is happening because the .txt files, that were used to configure the components of the flash movie, were not transferred up correctly to your web server. This ONLY happens when you use an FTP program, Dremweaver, or FTP via FrontPage to transfer up to your web server. But fear not! There is a solution. The problem arises from the fact that many FTP programs (or programs that transfer via FTP) do not correctly identify that those particular .txt files should be transferred as "binary" files rather than "ascii/text". One might think that they should be transferred as "ascii/text", however as they actually are encoded to contain "Unicode" characters (such as German, Chinese, as well as English), the files actually need to be transferred as BINARY files. 1) Most FTP programs indentify the method that the files need to be transferred by way of the file extension. Example: .txt 2) Other FTP programs idenity the method that the files need to be transferred based on their "mime type" or "encoding". When publishing with Dreamweaver, FrontPage (using the FTP method), the method used is method #1. What you need to use is something that uses method #2.
  • If you're using FrontPage, try using the "Publish via FrontPage Extensions or Sharepoint Services" method instead.
  • If you're using FrontPage but cannot use the "FrontPage Extensions or SharePoint Services" option, go to www.download.com and search for the free trial version of "FTP Voyager". This FTP program automatically transferrs files correctly.
  • If you're using Dreamweaver, go to www.download.com and get the free trial version of "FTP Voyager".
  • If you're already using an FTP program, look for a way to configure it so that it transfers up the specified files (see below) as binary.
  • If you're already using an FTP program but cannot configure it so that it transfers specific files as binary, then go to www.download.com and grab the free trial version of "FTP Voyager".
Once you have an FTP program that transfers files as binary, identify all of the .txt files within the "flash" folder (and subsequent suboflders) and transfer those files up to your web server. Make absolutely sure that you clear your web browser's cache afterwards (In IE: Tools menu -> Internet Options -> Delete Files) then close down and restart your browser. To test whether the file has been fixed, go to: http://www.yourweb.com/flash/taglines/taglines.txt (replace yourweb.com with your own domain name) If the file looks "messed up" with all sorts of funny characters, then the file is still not up there in the correct format -- double check your transfer settings and try again.
